St. John has hundreds of boat moorings but not one airport. For most travelers, getting to and from St. John ends and begins at the St. Thomas airport (STT).

From the airport take a taxi to either Downtown Charlotte Amalie, (15 minute cab ride) or Red Hook, (45 minute cab ride), and then take one of the passenger ferries to St. John. Either option will cost $20 or more per person, depending on luggage. From Downtown - 15 minute cab ride then 45 minutes by water, departing every two hours from 9am and at 5:30pm. From Red Hook - 45 minute cab ride, then 20 minutes by water, departing hourly from 6am to midnight

The Red Hook ferry to St. John runs the most frequently-every hour on the hour until midnight-so that is what most travelers use. If you miss the ferry at Red Hook (they generally are punctual), just walk around the corner to your left - lots of places to get snacks, meals, or shop for food in time for the next ferry.

We encourage Maho and Harmony guests to seek out Mr. Frett who owns and runs a taxi shuttle (an open but covered safari style truck) between Cruz Bay and Maho Bay/Harmony. He meets the 9 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, 5 pm, 7 pm and the 9 pm ferries from Red Hook. This is his in-season schedule; during other times of the year it would be worth checking the front desk (340/776-6240). He charges $8 one person, one way - luggage extra. He does not meet the Charlotte Amalie ferry but, if you wish to wait for Mr. Frett, there are lots of shops, stores and restaurants in Cruz Bay.

If you miss Mr. Frett, any one of dozens of taxis will take you to Maho/Harmony from Cruz Bay although rates can fluctuate greatly.

For Concordia, you should rent a car as it is very difficult to function at Concordia without one. You will want a car to get to stores, restaurants and even the beach. The St. John car rental agencies below are privately owned and, based on recent guest experience, are recommended. For the most part, the agencies are within a short walking distance from the ferry, but if you provide the agencies with your arrival information, many rental agencies will pick you up at the ferry dock. If you don't have a rental car, for $1, the public bus VITRAN leaves from the St. John ferry dock and makes periodic stops throughout the day making the 10-mile winding trek from Cruz Bay to Salt Pond Bay (near Concordia).
